Tatev Ropeway Guide
Wings of Tatev: Soar Above the Vorotan Gorge Guide
Experience breathtaking views and a thrilling ride on the Wings of Tatev, the world's longest reversible aerial tramway. This engineering marvel stretches 5.7 kilometers (3.5 miles) across the stunning Vorotan Gorge, connecting the village of Halidzor with the ancient Tatev Monastery. The journey offers unparalleled panoramic vistas of the rugged Armenian landscape, making it a must-do for any visitor to the region. The Wings of Tatev was built as part of a larger initiative to revitalize the Tatev Monastery and surrounding area. It was officially opened in 2010 and has since become a major tourist attraction, significantly improving access to the monastery and boosting the local economy. The ropeway was designed and built by the Swiss company Garaventa Doppelmayr, ensuring the highest safety standards. The primary activity is, of course, the ride itself! The views are simply spectacular, offering incredible photo opportunities. Once you reach Tatev, you can explore the historic Tatev Monastery (described below). The area also offers hiking trails with varying levels of difficulty, allowing you to further immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Vorotan Gorge. While not directly at the ropeway stations, nearby villages offer traditional Armenian cuisine, including Khorovadz (barbecue), Harissa (wheat porridge with meat), and Gata (sweet bread).
Transportation
The easiest way to reach the Halidzor station (the starting point of the ropeway) is by car or taxi from Goris. Public transportation options are limited, but marshrutkas (minibuses) do run between Yerevan and Goris. From Goris, you'll need to arrange local transportation to Halidzor.
